When your order ships, you will receive an email with a tracking number. Typically, USPS Ground delivers within 2-5 business days, but delays are possible during busy seasons like the holidays. However, once your order is with USPS, delivery is out of my control. I cannot refund shipping costs or replace missing or stolen packages, so please be sure to keep an eye on your tracking. FIRE + FOLK is not responsible for packages after they have been deemed delivered by USPS. Please note that I am only able to ship within the USA at this time.

Burning a wood wick IS different from a cotton wick! You can watch a video and read a post about how to properly light and burn a wood wick here.

Wood wicks *are* a little trickier at first than cotton wicks, but once you get used to the process, they are so cozy with their crackling wood!

Unlike a cotton wick (which you light at the top), you light a wood wick at the bottom of it where it meets the wax, and drag the flame all the way across the wood. That is usually all it takes, but if the flame is weak at first, you can gently tilt the candle around to “stoke” the fire — getting the oxygen and flame moving to make sure all parts of the wick are fully ablaze, sort of like you would do with a campfire.

Be sure to burn your candle long enough that the melted wax pool reaches all sides of the vessel before extinguishing the flame; this typically takes 1-3 hours depending on your candle size. If you put out the flame before the melt pool is full, your wax can tunnel, or burn down the middle.

Before each use, be sure to trim off the charred part of the wick and relight. You want your wick to be around 1/8”. Your wick will *not* light if there is a lot of char on the top… the flame needs fresh wood!

If you accidentally trim the wick too short, the wick may “drown” a bit in the melt pool, which can cause a weak flame. If this happens, extinguish the candle, then carefully use a paper towel to dab the melted wax near the wick to soak up some excess wax so the wick has room to breathe.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of it, this process becomes easy and the cozy ambiance of the crackling wick is so worth it!

PS: For safety and proper burn, do not burn *any* type of candle for more than 4 hours at a time.

My candles are vegan, cruelty-free, and completely non-toxic! I handcraft all our candles from start to finish in our tiny home studio using pure, locally sourced soy wax, essential oils, and clean, non-toxic fragrance oils. They are free of paraffin, additives, dyes, phthalates, and harmful chemicals often found in many commercial candles. Some handcrafted candle brands use wax “blends” which contain petroleum-based paraffin, as well as fragrance oils that contain pthalates, carcinogens, and endocrine disrupters. Many popular candle fragrance suppliers have Prop 65 warnings on their candle fragrance oils. I refuse to use those oils, and opt instead for certified clean fragrances only.

According to studies conducted by South Carolina State University and others, paraffin-based candles (a byproduct of the petroleum industry) emit toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene, and when lit frequently can lead to respiratory, asthma, and allergy problems. Pure vegetable wax candles, however, proved to burn cleanly and without emitting these toxins.

In fact, many of my customers with asthma say mine are the first candles they have ever been able to burn without any symptoms — and as a chronically ill person myself, that is my goal!

Also, pure soy wax candles burn slower and longer than paraffin or soy blend candles!

Our candles are meant to beautifully scent a room without overpowering — no fragrance headaches here! We work hard to ensure that our candles have a wonderful cold throw (unlit) and hot throw (while burning). Keep your candle size in mind. A 4oz candle is designed for a smaller space, like a bathroom or bedroom. A larger 9oz or 11oz vessel will scent a larger space. You can also use several smaller candles placed around your home in complimentary scents! 

I encourage reusing your candle vessel in creative ways, or at least placing it into recycling — but first you’ll need to clean it out! Once your wax level is down to the last 1/4″, it’s time to clean it out. Simply fill the vessel with hot, soapy water and let it soak for a bit. Then, use a spoon to scrape out any leftover wax and the wick. Afterward, wash it with dish soap and let it dry… voila! It’s ready for a small plant, to organize small items around the house… or whatever you can think of!

If you prefer, you can also place the candle in the freezer overnight, and in the morning you should be able to pop the frozen wax out with a spoon! Then just wash and dry.

Please note that the linen texture labels have a stronger adhesive. These need to be soaked in very hot water for a while, then the labels can be gently scrubbed off.
